News / This Issue / CD 485 Mason presents Animal Language

This issue’s covermount CD has been mixed by Mason, the Dutch house sensations who shot to prominence with ‘Exceeder’ a few years back but who’ve now moved their sound on immeasurably…

Mason

'Frontrow Chemistry'

"There was no doubt this would have to be on the mix as it's the track I've been playing out the most throughout the last year. It always creates a lot of fun on dancefloors. Gonna be on the upcoming album in a different version with the legendary Kurtis Blow on it."

Mason

'Kippschwinger'

"Taken from the first Animal Language release. It's all about contrasts here with the rolling dark groove and the stabs that cut through everything. 'Kippschwinger' means saw waveform in German (according to some dodgy German old synth we bought!)."

Mason

'You Are Not Alone'

"This is an unreleased upcoming Animal Language tune, with a package of remixes by Paolo Mojo, Rene Amesz, Zoo Brazil and Glenn Morisson. It was meant as a more poppy album track, but turned out differently."

Mason

'Affra'

"We wanted to make something I could fit really well in my DJ sets, which resulted in 'Affra'. It's named after some girl that nobody picked on a Dutch dating show, and we felt bad for her. I don't think she reads DJmag though!"

Mason

'The Badger'

"Really happy with the whole new disco and funk-driven tracks these days, and this one falls into that category I suppose. It also puts an emphasis on the fact that clubbing is about having fun and shouldn't be too serious."

Mason

'Intimate Expresse'

"A very atmospheric and dramatic piece of house. We made the initial idea ages ago but took some time to track down the orchestra and get them to give an OK for it. Released on Pickadoll, the imprint of Swedish superstar John Dahlbäck."

Mason feat DMC & Sam Sparro

'Corrected (Dub The Club)'

"This is the first single from our upcoming pop album, together with these two heroes. This is the dub mix from the original pop track, but the package includes a whole bunch of mixes, from the likes of Riva Starr and Alex Gopher. Out about now on Ministry of Sound/Animal Language."

Rex The Dog

'Prototype (Mason's Animal Language Treatment)'

"Always been a big fan of Rex, and Prototype in particular, so it wasn't a hard decision when we got asked for a remix. The original is amazing obviously, so we thought we'd give it an Italo 'Flashdance' kinda make-over. Gonna be out on his label later this year."

Mason

'Syncrom'

"As we're both such big lovers and collectors of old Italo house and electronic disco we wanted to make an anthem along those lines. Although it's quite out of the ordinary, it's been the highlight in many of my DJ sets. I suppose you need to dig over-the-top music to enjoy this one."

JCA & TAI

'Yalla Yalla (Mason Remix)'

"Great Stuff has been the home of many of our records, so we wanted to contribute to the celebration of their 100th release, which features a lot of their main artists. Very DJ-friendly too."

Mason

'Who Killed Trance?'

"Quite an epic melodic track that doesn't really fit any category, and has a very soft touch-down at the end. No disrespect to trance DJs by the way!"

Mason

'Capibara (Refurb)'

"Every Animal Language release comes with a non-dance make-over which can be any style of music you can think of. For 'Capibara' we wanted to make a proper polka/klezmer track as that kind of music is such fun. We recorded it in a bedroom, in case you were wondering."
